The moment a rose, tulip or marigold is severed from its stem, it begins dying. To reach consumers before wilting renders it worthless, blooms must be cooled, graded, boxed, flown, auctioned and sold\u2014often within 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most time-sensitive and weather-dependent trades on the planet. It was built on the assumption that certain regions would always deliver the right amount of sun, rain and cool nights to keep petals perfect.<\/p>\n<p>That assumption is breaking down\u2014from Kenya\u2019s Rift Valley to the highlands of Ecuador, from a wholesale market under a Kolkata bridge to climate-controlled greenhouses in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"kenyawhenthelakecamefortheroses\">Kenya: When the Lake Came for the Roses<\/h2>\n<p>The shores of Lake Naivasha in Kenya\u2019s Great Rift Valley seemed engineered for rose cultivation. The altitude tempers equatorial sun; the freshwater lake provides irrigation; daylight barely varies year-round. This narrow strip of land now supplies roughly <strong>40 percent of roses sold in the European Union<\/strong>, generating more than 81 billion Kenyan shillings in export earnings in 2025 and supporting over 150,000 jobs, most held by women.<\/p>\n<p>But the lake that made the industry possible is now drowning it. Since 2011, Lake Naivasha has risen in erratic surges\u2014a phenomenon scientists call the &#8220;rising lakes&#8221; crisis, driven by shifting rainfall and warming temperatures across the Rift Valley. This is no single flood; it is a slow siege. Greenhouse by greenhouse, the water advances and never retreats. Researchers estimate the lake has swallowed as much as <strong>three-quarters of some flower farms\u2019 land<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dickson Ngome leased a small plot near the lake in 2008, when the shore sat more than two kilometers away and farmers feared the lake might vanish. Instead, the water crept closer each year. In late 2025, after an early rainy season that refused to end, Ngome and his family woke to find their home and farm underwater. Thousands of others along the shoreline have been similarly displaced.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The irony is bitter,&#8221; said a Kenyan researcher who studies the lake system. &#8220;An industry once threatened by drought is now being drowned by rain nobody predicted. And the lake does not wait for anyone\u2019s five-year plan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Growers are relocating greenhouses to higher ground, investing in flood barriers and lobbying for better water-level forecasting. But the water keeps rising.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"theandesrosesbredforaclimatethatnolongerholdsstill\">The Andes: Roses Bred for a Climate That No Longer Holds Still<\/h2>\n<p>Across the Atlantic, in the volcanic highlands around Quito, Ecuador, and the flower districts outside Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, growers produce most of the roses sold in North America. At altitudes above 2,500 meters, warm days and cool nights historically yielded roses with thick stems, huge blooms and extraordinary vase life\u2014so perfect that <strong>Ecuadorian and Colombian growers built a $1.4 billion-plus export industry<\/strong> almost entirely on microclimate.<\/p>\n<p>That microclimate is faltering. In 2024, a powerful El Ni\u00f1o flipped the Andes\u2019 rainfall patterns: torrential rain lashed the Pacific coast while high savannas dried out. Ecuador was forced to ration electricity; Colombia\u2019s capital faced water restrictions. Growers who spent a century optimizing for one weather pattern now manage drought stress and erratic downpours in the same cycle\u2014sometimes within the same month.<\/p>\n<p>Industry analysts describe growers who over-pruned rose bushes into near-dormancy during one crisis, then scrambled to bring plants back into production for the next demand surge. Roses recover on their physiological timeline, not the market\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The loading docks in Quito and Bogot\u00e1\u2014which handle tens of thousands of tons of flowers in the two weeks before Mother\u2019s Day alone\u2014increasingly gamble on logistics windows that a single unexpected storm can close.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"indiatheheatthatturnsmarigoldstogold\">India: The Heat That Turns Marigolds to Gold<\/h2>\n<p>Kolkata\u2019s Mallick Ghat market, sprawling beneath the Howrah Bridge for more than 130 years, is one of the world\u2019s largest fresh-flower markets. Its narrow lanes overflow with roses, lotus, tuberose and marigolds\u2014the flowers that saturate Hindu ritual life from temple offerings to wedding garlands to funeral wreaths. More than 2,000 vendors work here daily, arriving by truck from growing villages an hour or two outside the city.<\/p>\n<p>These markets are violently sensitive to weather because they run on same-day freshness and next-to-no cold storage. A late monsoon, sudden heat spike or unseasonal downpour can wipe out a day\u2019s income for thousands of vendors at once.<\/p>\n<p>In early 2024, that vulnerability played out in vivid numbers at Bengaluru\u2019s iconic KR Market. A brutal heatwave collided with the city\u2019s water crisis just as two major festivals\u2014Ugadi and Eid\u2014fell days apart. Jasmine jumped from around 300 rupees per kilogram to 600 almost overnight. Roses doubled. Longtime vendors said the heat and water shortage had throttled the harvest just as demand spiked.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, better rains told the opposite story: jasmine prices for the same festival season fell by half in a single day.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"thenetherlandsaclimatebuiltindoorswithahiddenweakspot\">The Netherlands: A Climate Built Indoors, With a Hidden Weak Spot<\/h2>\n<p>Around Aalsmeer, south of Amsterdam, the Royal FloraHolland auction moves <strong>more than 40 million stems daily<\/strong> through a warehouse the size of 200 football fields. Flowers arrive from over 60 countries, are sorted, priced by a descending-price &#8220;Dutch auction&#8221; clock and shipped onward within hours. Much of this system runs on climate-controlled greenhouses that manufacture an endless spring regardless of outdoor conditions.<\/p>\n<p>That engineered independence revealed its vulnerability when Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine sent European natural gas prices soaring twenty-fold in 2022. Dutch greenhouse growers, dependent on gas-fired heating through cold, dark winters, found themselves unable to afford the climate control that made their business possible.<\/p>\n<p>Grower Ruud van der Lans made the unprecedented decision to switch off lights in 80 percent of his greenhouses that winter. Industry groups estimated <strong>up to 40 percent of the country\u2019s roughly 3,000 greenhouse businesses<\/strong> were in financial distress. The number of growers abandoning the trade more than doubled that year, cutting roughly 100 million euros from annual flower production.<\/p>\n<p>Some Dutch growers have since poured tens of millions of euros into geothermal heating and biomass plants, treating energy diversification as climate adaptation. Others now recycle up to 90 percent of water used across the sector.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"abusinessbuiltonborrowedweather\">A Business Built on Borrowed Weather<\/h2>\n<p>What connects a flooded rose farm in the Rift Valley, a drought-stressed hillside outside Quito, a heatwave in a Bengaluru market and a gas crisis in a Dutch greenhouse is the same underlying fact: The modern flower trade was built by identifying the handful of places on Earth where weather happened to be nearly perfect for growing delicate, fast-perishing crops\u2014and then betting an entire global logistics network on that weather staying put.<\/p>\n<p>Valentine\u2019s Day and Mother\u2019s Day, the two biggest days on the floral calendar, now depend on cargo planes lifting off on schedule from Bogot\u00e1, Quito and Nairobi, which depends on harvests timed to the day, which depends on rainfall and temperature patterns that used to be reliable enough to plan a business around.<\/p>\n<p>They no longer are\u2014uniformly. Growers everywhere are adapting: moving greenhouses to higher ground in Kenya, diversifying rose varieties for heat and drought tolerance in the Andes, building better water storage in Indian villages, chasing energy independence in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>None of it is a permanent fix. All of it is an admission that the old assumption\u2014that the sky would simply keep cooperating\u2014no longer holds.<\/p>\n<p>For the vendor at Mallick Ghat sorting marigolds at dawn, or the farmer paddling a boat past his flooded greenhouse on Lake Naivasha, the flower trade was never really about flowers.
